Cultivating Desire....

On my recent adventure to visit my sisters, I was given many great opportunities to have deep and meaningful conversations with my brother-in-law, Scott. On one occasion we disused cultivating desire.....and even just talking about it for a short time got the wheels in my head turning, and I've been thinking about it a lot over the past 2 weeks.
In order to attract something into our lives, we first need to have a deep desire for it.

Desire is a mental state that we need to cultivate.

The things that we desire most are what consumes our lives...

whatever we most desire become's a priority...

..its something we make time for no matter what!

This thought brought me to examine my life. And I found a lot of things that I really struggle to making time for that SHOULD be at the top of my list! Reading, and spending time in the bible falls into that category, which means that my desire to read the bible must be really low, or, there are other things that I have a higher desire to do than read my bible.

I really do want to be in Gods word every day. But just wanting it, doesn't seem to get me anywhere! I need to cultivate that "want" into an absolute desire!

Something else that can be done, is to check your priorities! Are there some "not so important" things in your life that tend to take over? Are there things that easily help you wast time that you could be using to do things like, read your bible?! I know there are things in my life that I have allowed to become a huge distraction to my spiritual life.

How do you get rid of unhealthy desires? And how do you re-kindle, and build up right desires?

I know that I don't have the best answers for these questions, but I do have some suggestions...

Give it to God first of all. He wants us to be dependent on Him! And in truth we can do very little good on our own! So ask Him for wisdom, and guidance, and perseverance.

I think that just being aware of the unhealthy desires in your life is a huge step in the right direction as well. I don't think that you can totally rid yourself of unhealthy desires, their always going to be there because we are sinful people! But you can definitely lessen those desires, and slowly weed them out and replace them with new desires! You should also avoiding places or things that trigger the unhealthy desire.

And when It comes to cultivating right desires, the most important thing you can do is spend time in prayer! Ask God to help you! Again, He wants us to be dependent on Him.

If the thing you are struggling with is reading the bible on a daily basis (like me) and just spending time learning it.....something that you can do is....just DO IT....don't procrastinate! Make a habit about of it. Maybe even get an accountability partner, someone who will encourage you and check up on you.

Those are just the my thoughts on the subject. And hope they all made sense, and were helpful to you!

Love and blessings <3

  1. It's not always easy to get started with the desires, that is why you have to ask The Holy Spirit to spark your desire, like you said! The more time you spend with Him, and the more you make it a habit, the more what He wants becomes what you want. I have found that it is hard for me to start reading the Bible, but once I get a taste of the words truth I don't want to stop! Great post! :)
